Following the tragic murder of Sabina Akter Munni in Bagerhat, on June 11, 2024, a human chain protest was held at the Press Club, demanding immediate justice and a thorough investigation into Munni’s death. Reports suggest the death resulted from ongoing domestic abuse and dowry demands by her husband and brother-in-law. The protest, attended by 119 citizens including journalists, women leaders, communities, teachers and students, prominently featured members of local NGOs, women’s councils, and journalists.
Munni, married in 2005, endured repeated abuse despite meeting dowry demands, ultimately resulting in her forcible eviction from her home during pregnancy in 2007. Despite lodging complaints, she had to suffer intolerable physical abuse until she was poisoned and tragically died in May 2024. The protest underscored widespread condemnation of Munni’s murder and called for severest legal measures to punish the people associated with the murder of Munni. Civil societies expressed strong condemnation of Munni’s murder and demanded justice to prevent such incidents in Bagerhat. A memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner of Bagerhat on behalf of the citizen organization. As a result of the protest, Deputy Commissioner, local police official and journalists were informed about the brutal murder and the news was published on social media and in various newspapers.
