Protecting our mangrove forest: Sundarban Day 2024 observation in Mongla

The “Sundarban Day -2024 was observed on February 14, 2024, at the Chila River bank in Mongla, Bagerhat, aimed to raise awareness and build a movement to protect the Sundarban and Pasur River. The event was attended by officials from Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon, representatives from Badabon Sangho, and local women leaders. Women leaders who participated in the event demanded the importance of protecting the Sundarban, calling it community “lungs” and urging collective action. Women members echoed same sentiments, emphasizing the critical role of the Sundarban in community lives. During a free discussion, women leaders highlighted the challenges faced by local communities, including exploitation and environmental degradation. Mr. Noor Alam from Poribesh Andolon assured due supports from his organization and emphasized the need for advocacy at the upazila level. The event concluded with a rally on the banks of the Pasur river. Outcome includes 40 women leaders have come to know the importance of Sundarban Day observation, 22 women raised voice with courage against negative actions of government and company.
