On June 5, 2024, a training session titled “Community-Based Gender discrimination, Equality, and Leadership Development for Women Leaders” was held in Katakhal, Mongla. Attended by 35 women, the session aimed to empower female fishers by raising awareness about their rights, reducing gender discrimination, and promoting leadership skills. The session began with Tanzila Khatun encouraging women to speak for equal wages, seed support, and self-reliance in irrigation. She emphasized that physical capability should not regulate wages and encouraged women to raise their voices against injustice. Participants were divided into five groups to discuss daily exploitation faced in their families, society, and workplaces. They highlighted issues such as lack of financial independence, verbal abuse from husbands, restrictions on the visits to parents’ houses, and bad comments by community people about their characters while working outside home. Group members and leaders analysed these issues, emphasizing that gender differences are taught by family, society, and the state. Together, they urged for the creation of a discrimination-free generation. The training resulted in 35 women feeling mentally stronger, promising not to remain silent against injustice. They promised to teach their children about gender equality and to stand up for their own rights. The training inspired these women to advocate for their own rights and work towards a more equitable society.
