Objectives of the meeting: To enlighten the fisher-folk about the advantages and disadvantages of fisher-folk cards, wage discrimination towards female, salinity, health risks, ways to battle the climate change, government’s grants and services and so on issues.
Group members organized a series of consultation meetings with the fisher-folk at Kuakata in Potuakhali on 10-11th June 2023. During the meeting importance of having cards of fisher-folk were explained. For example, medical services, occupational recognization, grants and trainings and other facilities provided by the governments cannot be received without possessing the card.
Severity of health risks of this folk due to salinity and climate change were illustrated. Such as headache, extreme body and leg ache, skin and mouth diseases, infertility, uterine infections, weakness, loss of appetite etc are their health challenges. Most of the population of this tribe is living under the poverty line. Affording good health care and medical support is beyond their reach. Even the government’s services are inadequate for them to lead a minimum humanely standard. Counselling regarding the equality of wages among both genders and getting along with climate change were carried out as well.
Result: Fisher-folk were informed of the cards’ importance, health risks and some coping technics to face climate change.
